I read this LA Times article about the founder of Sire Records, Seymour Stein, and the final quote may very well sum up his huge career – “But don’t print any of that. I don’t want to piss them off. They’ll throw everything in the garbage.”
With that line he was dropping a statement with the guise of plausible deniability, while for most of his career, he was listening to and understanding the undercurrents of the music industry. This allowed him to hear the potential in punk (The Ramones) or the next pop icon (Madonna) or the genius of the likes of Brian Wilson.
Its a good read. I’m looking forward to his biography.
