Planet of Sound is one of my favourite local record and audio shops. They stock what they believe to be the 1,000 top vinyl records, but when possible, they will bring special order items in to one of their stores in Toronto or Ottawa. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and I don’t find they push the up-sell. They have a very select audio equipment stock. I previewed Harbeth speakers during my first visit and hope to eventually return with enough cash to buy a pair. They also carry some fine turntables by Pro-ject and Teac.
Planet of Sound has a very straight forward Record of the Month Club. You sign up for a 6 or 12 month membership and you are billed the cost of the curated record selected each month less 15% plus $10 flat-rate shipping within Canada. The club is only open to members in Canada. In addition to the new record each month, you get 15% off any other record you choose to purchase. Planet of Sound provides free shipping for orders over $99. That’s a stack of 5 or 6 records at today’s prices for new vinyl, so it wouldn’t be too difficult to get some free shipping.
Past Record of the Month selections have been, Ryan Adams-Prisoner, Damien Jurado-Visions of Us on the Land, Tame Impala-Currents, Beach House-Depression Cherry, Neil Young-Live at the Cellar Door, Darkside-Psyhic, Daft Punk-Random Access Memories, Arcade Fire-Reflektor – I cherry picked some of my personal favourites from the past four plus years of the Planet of Sound club.
The goal according to Planet of Sound “is to provide customers the ability to hear some new music that they may not regularly think of listening to”. Based on what they have shipped so far, I’d say they are achieving this goal.
What do you get and what does it cost?
You get a new vinyl record monthly at a 15% discount.
15% off all other vinyl purchases both new and used.
The cost is the cost of the record at a 15% discount plus $10 flat rate shipping. I’m estimating this at $30/month CDN.
